In 2018, the LEGO brand celebrated the 60th anniversary of the brick’s patent, marking six decades of empowering creativity and imagination. To honour this milestone, we launched a series of special-edition LEGO Classic boxes, each featuring an open-ended question designed to spark curiosity and creative thinking. These prompts invited builders of all ages—from 5 to 99—to personalise their answers in the most LEGO way possible: by building them.
Instead of traditional, prescriptive instruction booklets, each box included a collection of inspirational builds that encouraged imaginative interpretation. From a rollerskating frog, to an octopus chef to a seahorse sipping a cherry milkshake, the builds showcased the limitless creativity unlocked when people are given permission to experiment, play, and express themselves freely.
This anniversary edition reframed the LEGO brick not just as a toy, but as a timeless tool for storytelling and self-expression—celebrating 60 years of building, rebuilding, and reimagining the world.
